3x at the Bottom Matters

A 3x low end gives you a genuinely usable field of view in close cover — 35.3 feet at 100 yards — where a 4.5x or 6x scope leaves you hunting for the animal in the glass. At the top, 15x is plenty for identifying and shooting at the distances most western hunting actually happens.

The G4i BDC Reticle

The G4i BDC is an illuminated reticle (that's what the "i" means) with reference marks to compensate for bullet drop and bullet drift. Vortex describes it as usable effectively with a variety of firearms — it's a hunting reticle designed to give you holds without the visual clutter of a full precision grid. Push-button illumination runs on a CR2032, included.

Second Focal Plane

This model is second focal plane, which means the reticle stays the same visual size through the zoom range. It's the traditional hunting configuration: the reticle never gets too fine to see at low power or too thick at high power, and the BDC marks are calibrated for a specific magnification — check the subtension chart for the correct setting.
